The junior footballers contested the south semi-final in Clonmel sportsfield last Saturday against Ballingarry. A strong breeze was behind the Newcastle team in the first half but unfortunately it was Ballingarry who dominated the play and lead by 0-7 to 0-1 at half time. The deficit could have been even greater but for a great save by Darren Goonan. Play improved in the second half resulting in a goal from Andrew Fitzpatrick leaving 0-2 between the teams with 10 minutes remaining. Try as they might, the Newcastle team could not reduce the deficit any further and were 0-2 behind at the final whistle. Team and scorers were; Darren Goonan, John McCarra, Tomás O’Dwyer, Emmet Prendergast, Niall Morrissey, Shane Hickey, Brian Sweeney, Cormac O’Flynn), Diarmuid Devaney, Barry Hickey (0-2), Conor Grant, Daniel Kennedy (0-1), Andrew Fitzpatrick (1-2, 1 free), Tommy Sweeney and Brian Hyland.  Subs were James Fitzpatrick for Niall Morrissey, Caoimhín McGrath Tommy Sweeney and Alan Sweeney for John McCarra.

This game marks the end of the action for the club this year, only the minors in combination with Kilsheelan-Kilcash remain in competition. The club would like to thank those in charge of both the hurling and football teams during the year – Aidan Sweeney (manager), Michael Guiry (coach), Paudie Sweeney, Anthony O’Dwyer, Anthony Condon and Robert Hackett (selectors) and Shirley Ryan (first aid).
