The semi-final of the junior A football championship against Clonmel Commercials was played in Cahir on Saturday evening last, September 1st. After a slow start, Newcastle became the dominant team in the first half opening up a half time lead of 0-10 to 0-4. Having played some very good football, Newcastle was well worthy of this 6 point lead. In the second half, the game became tighter, with Commercials playing an extra defender. However, this did not prevent the Newcastle forwards from increasing their lead. The final score was 1-13 to 0-09. Unfortunately, the South final will not be played for a number of weeks but this time will give everyone a chance to stake a place in the team for the final. Team and scorers were Darren Goonan, Niall Morrissey, Tomás O’Dwyer, Emmet Prendergast, James Fitzpatrick, Shane Hickey, Will Kennedy, Conor Grant (0-1), Diarmuid Devaney, Barry Hickey (0-1 free), Michael Kennedy (0-2), Brian Hyland (1-0), Andrew Fitzpatrick (0-3), James Lonergan (0-1) and Daniel Kennedy (0-5). Subs were Caoimhín McGrath for Will Kennedy, Anthony Condon for James Lonergan, John O’Halloran for Brian Hyland, Johnny Hallinan for Conor Grant and Liam Devaney for Diarmuid Devaney.
