Newcastle Homecoming Festival

posted 24 Jun 2013, 13:28 by Newcastle Gaa
On Sunday June 23rd, in conjunction with the Newcastle Homecoming Festival, Newcastle GAA club held a field day for all the members of the club. The day began with a blitz for the juvenile members and the under 6’s under 8’s, under 10’s and under 12’s all played football games against the Nire. All the boys and girls who took part really enjoyed the games and they were all given a medal and some refreshments to mark the occasion. The junior footballers played a tournament game against Touraneena for the John Fitzpatrick Cup. Touraneena got off to a good start but eventually Newcastle made inroads into their lead and the match ended in a draw. Another game will hopefully be organised at a later date. The two teams were then provided with refreshments in the GAA hall. Finally, the clubs South winning teams of the 1980’s were invited to a function in the Community Hall where they were presented with certificates to mark the occasion and their contribution to the teams that won South titles in 1980, 1983, 1986 and 1987. PJ Cullinan showed slides of old photographs from the 1970’s and 1980’s and Eileen Condon provided all present with a hot meal. The club is very grateful to all who helped organise the day and all who attended – all the players, the juvenile parents, the teams from the Nire and Touraneena, the Newcastle players of the past, Eileen Condon for providing the food and PJ Cullinan for the slide show. A special mention to those that travelled long distances to attend – especially those from overseas who made the Gathering and the Homecoming festival a memorable event.
