South Junior A Football Semi-final

The junior A footballers qualified for the South final by beating St Patricks in Ned Hall Park on Saturday last, September 28th on the score of 1-10 to 0-9. In what was the proverbial game of two halves in the windy conditions, St Patricks led by 0-6 to 0-2 at half-time having played with the wind in the first half. Newcastle lost Diarmuid Devaney to injury in the first half and subsequently lost John O’Halloran at the start of the second half and their presence was sorely missed. In the second half, however, the entire team upped their performance and played more of the football they are capable of. A great goal by Brian Hyland in the closing stages gave the team some breathing room and they eventually won by 4 points. Team and scorers were; Darren Goonan, Michael Kennedy, Tomás O’Dwyer, Niall Morrissey, Caoimhín McGrath, Shane Hickey, John O’Halloran, Conor Grant, Diarmuid Devaney, Barry Hickey (0-2), Brian Hyland (1-1), Brian Sweeney (0-1), Andrew Fitzpatrick (0-4), Ray Hallinan and Daniel Kennedy (0-2, captain). Subs were Anthony Condon for Diarmuid Devaney, John McCarra for John O’Halloran, Oliver Smyth for Ray Hallinan.
