Clan na Gael 1-8 Newcastle 3-8

It was a slow start for the Newcastle girls, who took around 10 minutes to settle into the game. Clan na Gael came flying out of the blocks, scoring a goal straight from the throw-in before adding a point to put Newcastle under early pressure.

Newcastle gradually found their rhythm and began to work their way back into the contest with some well-taken points. Clan na Gael's goalkeeper made several outstanding saves to deny Elsa in one-on-one situations during the first half, but Elsa eventually got the better of her with a brilliantly taken goal. At the break, Clan na Gael held a narrow two-point advantage.

The second half demanded a huge effort from Newcastle, especially after Clan na Gael made another strong start to extend their lead to five points. However, the girls showed tremendous character and refused to give up. A crucial goal from Kate sparked the comeback, while excellent points from Fia, Julia, Amelia and Elsa steadily reduced the deficit.

The defence also had to be at their very best as Clan na Gael continued to attack. Emily B and Síofra produced some outstanding blocks to deny what looked like certain scores. In goal, Caitlin Magee was excellent, dealing confidently with balls over the top and making important saves that helped keep Newcastle in front during the closing stages.

The standout performer on the day, however, was Líadan. She had the difficult task of marking one of Clan na Gael's best players and gave her no time or space throughout the game. Time after time, Líadan got in front to win possession, claiming ball after ball and repeatedly getting her team out of trouble. She also made an impact going forward, bursting from defence to score a superb point. At the final whistle, her performance was recognised with a thoroughly deserved round of applause from both her teammates and the coaching staff.

The tough tests against Clan na Gael are far from over. They travel to Newcastle next Sunday afternoon for a hugely important league clash that could decide the destination of the league title. The girls would love to see plenty of support on the day, so if you can, come along and cheer them on as they look to finish the job💙💛💙💛
