On a roasting hot day in Healy-Farrell Park, our Newcastle U14 girls welcomed Clan na Gael for a winner-takes-all clash to decide the destination of the Division 3 league trophy.
After last week's game, where we were disappointed with our slow start, the girls spoke about the importance of getting on the front foot from the first whistle—and they certainly delivered. Newcastle flew out of the blocks with two early goals, but just like the previous meeting, Clan na Gael showed great character and responded with two goals of their own to level the contest.
The girls refused to let the momentum slip and dug deep, adding another couple of goals before the interval to head into the break with a deserved lead.
The second half saw Newcastle really turn the screw. The girls raised their intensity all over the pitch, building a healthy lead with some brilliant attacking football while the defence stood firm. Carrie-Mae Doherty was immense, winning tackle after tackle and cleaning up everything that came her way. Her work rate and determination were outstanding and played a huge part in securing the victory.
Captain Kate Dunne led by example with a true captain's performance. As she has done all season, Kate was willing to do whatever the team needed, playing in several different positions throughout the game, from attack to defence, and inspiring her teammates all the way to a fantastic Division 3 league title. 🏆
The commitment and determination shown by every single player today was there for everyone to see. After winning the championship last year, it is a fantastic achievement to now add a Division 3 league title to the cabinet after earning promotion
A special mention must also go to our younger U12 girls who have stepped up throughout the season. They have brought incredible energy every time they have pulled on the jersey and have never stopped working hard. They may sometimes be giving away size to older opponents, but they never let that hold them back. Amelia, Sarah, Megan, Julia, Emily, Elsa and Isobella have all pushed for places throughout the year and have always been ready to make an impact whenever called upon.
The support from everyone on the sidelines today was absolutely brilliant. Hearing the cheers from the crowd gave the girls a huge lift, and we would like to sincerely thank everyone who gave up their time to come along and support the team on such a warm day. It truly made a difference.
